Kuo-Ch'ing Tu   Professor, East Asian and Cultural Studies

Literature communicates culture,” says Kuo-Ch’ing Tu, who specializes in Chinese poetry, poetics, and world literatures in translation. “Poetry can describe beauty, and have an aesthetic impact that reaches beyond our daily lives.”

In his undergraduate course, “Imagism, Haiku, and Chinese Poetry,” Tu introduces the principles of the haiku and of classical Chinese poetry, and their influence on modern English poetry.

His love for literature is reflected in his commitment to teaching. “I am always willing to help my students to encourage them with their work,” says the professor of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies.

An accomplished poet and author, Tu is also editor of the journal, Taiwan Literature. In the early 1980’s, China began recognizing Taiwan literature as a valuable component of the Chinese canon. As the first publication to be devoted to the translation of Taiwan literature, the journal makes a unique contribution to the study of Chinese literature at UCSB.
