   Quote from William Davies King

 William
  Davies King

Professor and Chair, Dramatic Art

Like so many people, William Davies King was drawn to the study of theater at an early age because he “felt a need to make sense of the world.” He says that there is nothing so directly expressive of the world in all its complexity, in its layers of reality and possibility and impossibility, as a well-performed and well-written play. In that sense, King adds, the theater is a university and, “of course, the university is a theater, which is why we all wear such amusing clothes.” His particular fascination is with American drama, which “never ceases to amaze me with its awkward beauty.”

Of UCSB’s department of dramatic art, King says, “I enjoy that (it) is filled with strange and wonderful people who are committed to extending that strangeness and wonder to students.”
