          Quote from Douglas Daniels

Douglas Daniels   Professor, Black Studies and History

Teaching Black Studies and African-American history at UCSB for 22 years. He hopes his classes open the eyes of his students to past and present injustices in American society, but he also hopes his students come away with an appreciation of the strength of the human spirit.

“I suggest that rather than making them depressed, the struggles of African-American people should be a source of inspiration,” Daniels says.

Daniels’s passion is his research on the history of jazz. He shares his work — archival material and interviews with some of jazz’s most prominent artists — with students in his course “Black Studies 14: The History of Jazz.”

“I often share with them the things the musicians confide in me,” Daniels says. “I challenge them to think about the music from the musician’s point of view.”
