Understanding the human and social impact of the Internet and the new information age is the focus of research conducted by political scientist Bruce Bimber, who also serves as director of UCSB’s Center for Information Technology and Society. An award-winning teacher, Bimber is currently writing two books about the impact of information technology on the American political process. The first is a broad examination of how evolving technologies for communication have affected the evolution of democracy in the United States. The second analyzes the 2000 Presidential election and the role of the Internet in campaigns. “The information revolution is every bit as big and portentous as the Industrial Revolution,” says Bimber. “In the coming decades, the use of information technology and new communication capacity will dramatically alter commerce, culture, identity, social structures, politics, and relationships between nations.” |
