Knowledge is not something to be captured, written down and stored away on a shelf, according to assistant professor Ralph Armbruster-Sandoval. Instead, he teaches his students that knowledge is active, a dynamic tool to be put to use making the world a better place.

“I approach my teaching and my research from the point of view that it is important not only to interpret the world but to try to change it for the better,” he says.

His research focuses on globalization and how workers and activists are striving to improve third-world wages and working conditions. He is completing a book describing the proliferation of sweatshop clothing factories in Central America and has spent time investigating conditions in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. He also teaches classes on the implications of globalization.

“I ask my students to think about the impact of globalization and how it has developed over time,” he says. “And then I ask them to take a step back and think what we can do.”
